Benedict Taylor is a solo viola player & violinist active within contemporary string performance and improvised music in the British and European new music world. Described as a “virtuoso violist”, the central focus of his work is on the viola & improvisation, alongside composing for live performance, film, theatre, contemporary dance, art installation and multiple concept album projects.As an improviser he has performed and recorded internationally with many artists including John Butcher, Blanca Regina, Keith Tippett, Evan Parker, Terry Day, Lauren Kinsella, Lawrence Upton, Alex Ward, Cath Roberts, Renee Baker, Paul Dunmall, Neil Luck, John Edwards, Ivor Kallin, Hannah Marshall, Chris Cundy, Daniel Thompson, Tom Jackson, Kit Downes, Yves Charuest, Alexander Hawkins, Tom Challenger, Tetsu Saito amongst others.
Notable Festival, venue and radio appearances include; Spontaneous Music Festival Poland, BBC (Radio 3, Late Junction, Hear & Now, New Music Show, Radio 2), Jazz en Nord Festival France, London Contemporary Music Festival, Tete a Tete Opera Festival, Ronnie Scott’s, Cafe Oto, The Vortex, Aldeburgh Festival, Kings Place, The Barbican, ICA, Galway Jazz Festival, Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte Montepulciano, Southbank Centre, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Fête de la Musique Berlin, Resonance FM, Radio Libertaire Paris.
An award winning composer for film, theatre and television, he has created music for over 35 feature films, shorts, TV series & stage plays for companies such as Film London, Netflix, Amazon, Blumhouse & Ivanhoe among others, with his work showing at many international film festivals and theatre venues including; Rotterdam Film Festival, MoMA New York, Venice Film Festival, Berlinale, Palm Springs Film Festival, London Film Festival, Royal Court Theatre, Trafalgar Theatre, Mumbai Film Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, Centre, BFI London, NCPA Mumbai).
Through his work he’s given lectures at the Royal College of Music, Trinity Laban Conservatoire, City University of London, Surrey University, Royal Holloway College, Goldsmiths University of London.
