When Seeds Speak: A Seedy Ensemble

When Seeds Speak: A Seedy Ensemble by Miranda Whall in collaboration with Owen Lloyd, Angharad Davies and Yumino Seki will premiere at Chapter Arts Centre September 21st 2024.

The When Seeds Speak project utilises raw data generated from the metabolomic fingerprint analysis of a black oat seed Cierch du Bach generated in the labs of AberInnovations Advanced Analysis Centre at IBERS, Aberystwyth University.

In the live performance When Seeds Speak; A Seedy Ensemble, sound artist and composer Owen Lloyd will create a composition using the Max programming environment to create a generative composition that will run off the dataset gathered from the metabolic fingerprint analysis of the black oat seed. He will use the data to create music structures through synthesis techniques as well as timing control. Owen will also use audio recordings from the filed i.e., processes within the lifecycle of the grain; sowing, harvesting, threshing, winnowing, fermenting, cooking and eating, as well as Welsh and English spoken word by farmers, growers. Owen will also use sound generated from the lab during the analysis process including spoken word by scientists and lab technicians, and (EMF) Electro Magnetic Field recordings.

Angharad Davies (improvisation and experimental violinist), and Yumino Seki (Butoh dancer) will respond to Owen Lloyd’s (sound artist and composer) generative audio composition and the data as it appears in Owen’s Data Display of the metabolomic seed analysis, they will also respond to each other, to my mic amplified data drawing performance, to the conceptual and material components of the seed, and to the landscape in which the seed was grown and harvested.
