2nd September – Making sense of it all

Today I walked quietly and slowly with a map, GPS, pen, paper, peach, cheese sandwich and water.

4 shrews scurried past my path, black nosed sheep came boldly close to me, a large black bull watched me from behind a fence, moisture covered spiderwebs broke as I brushed past them with my foot, a buzzard watched me from a post, hundreds of flies landed on my face and hands while I took the photo above, a human being was cutting something with a motorised blade – grass maybe, the sun came and went, it was a still day, I got to know this place better, again, standing up, sitting and laying down. I look forward to crawling it.

I worked out a route, I worked out how many crawls I had left to do, I timed them – walking slowly, I worked out where to park. I felt I needed to have a plan in contrast to just crawling whichever way I found myself going. I felt comfortable to make a plan while assuring myself that there will still be a healthy amount of spontaneity and chaos, I know that from ‘down there’ on my hands and knees the plan will not be the same as it is ‘up here’ on my feet. I tried to find landmarks, to remember but I won’t be able to see many of them when it comes to it.

I estimate I will do 6 more 43 minute crawls during September and October to complete the route

  1. Down from the top ridge – a steep slope towards stone wall
  2. Across the sheep fields, the first part following a stone and heather wall
  3. The second part following the stone and heather wall
  4. Over the road, over a stream, past a ruin, past a cottage, very deep grass fields up to road
  5. Along the road, up over a steep green grass hill and partly down again towards the Pwllpeiran centre
  6. Down the rest of the grass hill, over the road, through the river arriving back at the Pwllpeiran centre

I thought about drawing (s) and why and how I would draw if I do, I thought about the publication, maps and I thought about how to bring the living matter into the gallery..
