22nd August – crawl four – Beetroot soup

While I was crawling today I was mostly thinking about the beetroot soup I was going to make in the evening, its pure coincidence that most of Hannah Mann’s stunning photos are purple!

I started the crawl at the tarn with a stick poking out of it, where I left off last time. When walking back from the crawl it didn’t seem that I had got very far, but it was quite a tough crawl with some rough ground and steep slopes, my wrists hurt quite a bit on the downward sections. I also went a bit to far along the ridge before heading down, so might have to back track a bit next time, it feels a bit awkward to do so but I want to get the stream, ruins and the wood into the crawl, and its all part of not being able to see where you are going from down there!

Exciting that I am heading down off the ridge into new pastures…

Saw some new things ‘from down there’ today; a large slug, a small white moth, a cluster of yellow fungi, lots of daddy long legs, more sheep, swarms of flies, and the colours seemed stronger, stronger purples and russet reds. I must start to find out about what I am seeing.

Hannah and I were a bit tired today and I felt a bit lacking in enthusiasm, as is normal part way through a project, as it starts to feel familiar. The light was much flatter than I had thought it would be and so I knew the Go Pro footage would be flat and dull, but when I had finished the arduous task of uploading all the footage I started fiddling with it in Premiere, compositing multiple bits of footage into one screen, with Tim Noble’s musical composition it started to feel exciting again, I realised the characteristics and nuances of each shoot are absolutely right just as they are, each shoot has its own unique quality. I am excited to start building it all up in Premiere as I go….
